What Does One Do on President’s Day?

I started mine off by sleeping until 7:30 a.m., then several hours of social media.  By 10:30 I jumped in the shower to get ready for lunch at Barbacco.  I had a $50 dining certificate from Open Table that was burning a hole in my pocket.  I’d considered saving it to use in either Honolulu or Miami, but it couldn’t be used at any of the restaurants in those cities that I was interested in.  So Barbacco it was.

This was not my first time eating at Barbacco.  It’s a few blocks from my office, so I’ve been known to dash over there for lunch before.  Their food is good overall with nice service.  The price point is much better than their sister restaurant, Perbacco, which is a few doors down.  I started with a small bowl of bean minestre with greens/soffrito parmigiano reggiano.  It had nice flavor and was to my liking.  When asking the waitress if the lasagna or the farrotto was better, she preferred the lasagna.  My main course was to be the polpette.  The waitress then suggested that I order a side, as she said the slice of lasagna wasn’t that large and the polpette only consisted of three.  Thus, I ordered roasted cauliflower as well.  Surprisingly, after the minestre, they brought everything else out at once.  I tasted a bit of each of them, then ordered a glass of Sangiovese, too.  The roasted cauliflower was fine; could have used more flavor.  The lasagna was composed of spinach pasta with ragu Bolognese AND béchamel sauce.  It lacked the homey rustic flavor that most lasagnas have.  Besides, my ex-husband made the best béchamel sauce ever, so this didn’t even come close.  However, by all other accounts, it was fine.  The polpette were Sicialian-style with pine nuts and raisins served with braised chard in a supposedly spicy tomato sugo.  The polpette were flavorful and moist, but were slightly sweet, as opposed to spicy.  As for the Sangiovese, it had obviously been chilled.  Since it didn’t get to room temperature during my meal, its taste was ruined for me.  Aside from the minestra, I wasn’t able to finish anything.  Thus, they wrapped it all up and I dropped it off in my office to have for lunch(es) later this week.

Since the weather was actually beautiful for San Francisco, particularly at this time of year, I decided to walk over to North Beach.  I passed through Chinatown and ran across some lion dancers, which reminded me that Chinese New Year (the Year of the Monkey) is still being celebrated.  The two lion dancers and their escorts were going in and out of various businesses dancing, followed by a string of firecrackers.

You already know that my favorite Italian restaurant is Ideale.  Three or four months ago, the owner of Ideale opened Piccolo Forno in North Beach.  Since I’d never made it in there yet, that was my mission for today.  The front of the restaurant was already relatively full.  I spied Giuseppe, who is managing the place, and went to say “hello.”  His brother, Fausto, also happened to be there.  I spoke with both of them a little bit and asked about their menu.  Giuseppe offered me a suppli/arancini, since he knows that I like them, but they’re so hard to find in North Beach.  Although I was still full from Barbacco, I managed to consume the suppli.  They”ll see me again in the future for a proper lunch.

Now that I’m home, a nap is on my agenda because a) I’m old and b) I must conserve energy for going to the gym later!

The newest message:

Any advice for younger men that want to hook up with you?

My advice is that it simply isn’t going to happen, especially if you’re 29 & I’m not attracted to you!!!

Another Non-Traditional Thanksgiving

My friend from L.A. and I met up in Las Vegas for Thanksgiving again.  We both stayed at The Venetian.  I arrived on Wednesday morning; she arrived around noon.  Although The Venetian gave me early check-in, they put me in the Venezia Tower for the first time.  The room was perfectly fine, had I not stayed in the Venetian Tower the last times.  My suite in the Venezia Tower was slightly smaller, had a more traditional Venetian décor, lacked a TV in the bathroom and lacked the remote control blinds.  I’m spoiled, it’s true, but since I spend a large amount of time soaking in the tub while there, I simply can’t live without a TV in the bathroom!  I resolved to switch rooms after eating.

While wandering through The Venetian, I came upon Prime Burger.  I wasn’t in the mood for eggs, bacon, omelettes or any breakfast food.  Prime Burger, believe it or not, had acai bowls for breakfast.  I wasn’t expecting much from a burger place, but their acai bowl truly surprised me.  For $10, the HUGE acai bowl had the usual bananas and strawberries, but also had shredded coconuts and cocoa nibs.  It was VERY tasty and a much better value than I receive at Blue Hawaii in the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

After breakfast, I did indeed call to inquire about having my room changed.  I was willing to wait until the normal check-in time of 3:00 p.m. to get a room in the Venetian Tower, but they told me that several of those rooms were ready.  They simply told me what floors had available rooms, then I chose a floor.  A bellman came to roll my two heavy hand-held bags over to the Venetian Tower.  I then settled in for awhile.

Eventually, I wandered down to Table 10 to see if my fave bartender from last year, Daniel, still worked there.  They were sad to inform me that he was off both Wednesday and Thursday, but would be there at 4:30 p.m. on Friday – right around the time I’d have to leave.  I had a few drinks while chatting with Pedro, anyway.  Then I told him that he’d see me again for Happy Hour.

When my friend, S., arrived, I went up to her room to get caught up on what had been going on in both of our lives for the past month and a half.  Once that was accomplished, we agreed to meet at Table 10 for Happy Hour.

Back at Table 10, even though we had an upcoming dinner reservation, I broke down and ordered the BBQ Shrimp.  At Happy Hour, the small portion (3 shrimp, plus a biscuit) was only $9.  They were really good, though.

Dinner, as usual, was at Mon Ami Gabi in Paris Hotel and Casino.  We LOVE their filet mignon with merlot butter.  We’re opposite, however, in that I order mine medium well and she orders hers medium rare.  We oohed and aahed over dinner, wishing that we could eat there every day.  After we finished our filets, the waitress came out with a profiterole with a candle in it and asked whose birthday it was.  Since both of us have birthdays at the end of October, we told her that there had obviously been a mistake.  She gave it to us, anyway, and we shared.  Yum!

Then it was back to drinking.  Since we were just across the street from The Cosmopolitan, I had to check out the Chandelier Bar and their much-talked about verbena drink.  The lower level is supposedly open 24 hours, but we went to the second level, which opens around 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.  It was beautiful – all those crystals, all that bling.  The $15 verbena drinks were interesting; we’d both order them again.  We were instructed to inhale the aroma, chew on the flower, then drink.  That resulted in a numbing sensation and, like a mini high, we were wide awake!  Of course, we didn’t just nibble on the flower.  Both of us ate the entire thing!  S. enjoyed it so much that she ordered another!

We later took a cab to another place that I’d read about, the Peppermill Restaurant and Fireside Lounge.  The restaurant seems more like a diner.  The Fireside Lounge definitely has a firepit and seems very old school.  We seated ourselves around the firepit and were happy to discover that it was Happy Hour.  S. had the Bacardi Margarita, while I had the Bacardi Creamsicle.  We also ordered some chips and salsa.  Everything was just ok.  Surprisingly, in a nod to my fedora, the waitress informed us that there’s a “no hat” policy enforced from 11:00 p.m. to midnight.  How bizarre is that?!  I could understand if it were baseball caps maybe, but…  Whatever, I removed my fedora, even though it wasn’t quite 11:00 p.m.  After our one drink, we both returned to The Venetian and called it an early night because I’d been up at 3:00 a.m. that day and she’d been up at 5:00 a.m.

I slept in until about 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.  I intended to go pick up some macarons at Le Macaron in the Grand Canal Shoppes.  I couldn’t find it again, though, so stopped in at Double Helix instead and had a few glasses of chardonnay.  The place was relatively empty, so I put my feet up and attended to social media on my iPad Mini whilst drinking.

Our Thanksgiving lunch was at Buddy V’s (the Cake Boss).  We didn’t want to spend a small fortune and neither of us really cared about having turkey, though they were offering a special Thanksgiving menu.  I had the macaroni and cheese carbonara (good) and Grandma’s meatballs (VERY good!).  S. had the pasta carbonara, which she raved about.  We split the butterscotch crème brulee, which was wonderful, although the cookies that came with it didn’t impress us.

The Venetian had given me a coupon for 2-for-1 well drinks at Yardbird, so we went in there for rum and Cokes.  They truly have a Southern menu when they offer things such as Chicken N Watermelon N Waffles or a Swine Burger!  Then it was back to Table 10 for Happy Hour again.  We both agree that it’s our favorite place, the bar we feel most comfortable at.  When we finished drinking there, we actually took a break (yes, to take naps!) before meeting up again around 8:00 p.m.

We started up again at I Love Burgers.  I’d been craving their Twisted Caramel Corn alcoholic milkshake (butterscotch schnapps with vodka).  I also ordered the turkey meatball sliders, which I couldn’t finish.  This time around, the milkshake had the caramel corn mixed into it, which I wasn’t fond of.  There’s nothing quite like sucking popcorn husks up in a straw.  The next time I’m going to order just the milkshake WITHOUT the caramel corn.  S. just had some fries.

We then ended up shopping.  She was looking for a new bag and wanted to look in Coach, Michael Kors, Kate Spade and Tory Burch.  Coach was the first stop.  Neither of us are huge fans of Coach and generally don’t like their stuff.  However, we both found several things we liked that evening.  She ended up buying some booties, some regular boots (at a VERY good price) and a handbag.  The sales people were very nice and offered us several bottled waters.  The Michael Kors store was next.  I found two bags and a pair of heels that I liked.  Unfortunately, the heels, though they looked fabulous on me, were not on sale.  The bags were, though, so I decided on one of them, plus bought a tunic top that was also on sale.  The best part was that our salesman, Bryson, offered us champagne.  We thought he was joking, but he most certainly was not.  We had a couple of glasses of champagne each!  I was also teasing him that a certain pair of flats with bling on them looked like orthopedic shoes!  (He actually agreed.)  Anyway, if you’re in Michael Kors in The Grand Canal Shoppes, ask for Bryson.  He’s a sweetie!

We had tickets for the High Roller and planned to be there around midnight.  As we were walking to the The Linq, we stopped off at one of those frozen daiquiri places ’cause I wanted a Bellini one.  S. decided to get one, too.  We were allowed to take them on the High Roller, which was better than paying extra to ride in the “Happy Hour” pod with the bar.  The view, as you can imagine, was pretty impressive at night.  I liked the music they played as well, which got you pumped up.  The only issue is that you get a lot of reflections when attempting to take photos.  There were probably 4 or 5 other people in the pod with us, and the ride lasted 30 minutes.  Once it ended, we high tailed it back to The Venetian because it was COLD and breezy outside!

We sat at the Laguna Champagne Bar, where I had cabernet sauvignon (not a very good one) and S. had a cocktail of some sort while playing video poker.  She then moved to a slot machine.  I was wandering around and even ate a slice of greasy pizza around 3:00 a.m.!  We’d had it by 4:30 a.m. and went to bed.

After checking out on Friday morning, I went back to I Love Burgers because they have $5 Bloody Marys and Mimosas from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., which is what they call their Hooray Hour.  I had three mimosas while talking to Sean and Izzy, two great guys.  Sean was telling me that he’s a hippie, but also suggested that I go to a place in Chinatown called Pho Kim Long for pho.  Izzy talked to me about his 17-year old daughter, saying that once she graduates in a year, he’s moving the family to Oregon because he hates Las Vegas.

S. and I had lunch reservations at B&B Burger and Beer.  I had The Morning After Burger – sautéed mushrooms, fontina, frisee, sunny side up egg and truffle aioli – plus a Peroni.  S. concocted her own burger, but it was very similar to mine, sans cheese.  That was a damned good burger!

S. left around 2:00 p.m. to go to the airport.  Once she left, I wandered back down to The Linq.  I looked in that Polaroid store, but it failed to interest me much.  I was planning to eat/drink in the Brooklyn Bowl, but they don’t open until 5:00 p.m.  I stopped in Yard House instead for truffle fries and the salted caramel butterscotch pudding.  The truffle fries lacked any discernible taste or essence of truffle and the salted caramel butterscotch pudding was so nauseatingly sweet that I couldn’t eat it.

Then it was one last time at Table 10 for a couple of pinot grigios at Happy Hour.  Daniel managed to show up a few minutes before I paid my bill.  He remembered me from last year, but had to ask my name again.  Told him that I’d see him on the next trip, which will hopefully encompass a weekend so that he’ll be around!

When the shuttle picked me up at The Venetian, I promptly fell asleep en route to the airport!

Wikiwiki to Waikiki

Not long after my sojourn to Miami, I made a mad dash to Honolulu for a whopping 3 nights.  Why only 3 nights, you may ask?  Mainly because there were only 2 more vacation days unaccounted for through the end of this year.  If I could find a flight that left on Saturday, then could return on Tuesday evening for the right price (United was having a sale), I’d do it.  Fortunately or unfortunately for me, I found the right price for the right days.

Three days/nights in Waikiki is more than enough for me to run around.  I did my usual drinking at the Mai Tai Bar at The Royal Hawaiian, as well as at the Mai Tai Bar at Ala Moana.  I bought leis in Chinatown, shopped at Ala Moana and ate at smaller local places.  For instance, I had a good spam sandwich at Coconuts Café, as well as a great smoothie called The Minty Hawaiian (pineapple, banana and mint) at Hawaiian Crown Plantation.  And, of course, I got a little sunbathing at the beach time in.

The only downer was that my 10:00 p.m. flight on Tuesday night was delayed until 3:46 a.m. on Wednesday morning.  All those hours in the cold(!) airport when all of the restaurants/bars had already closed were not fun.

Thus, let’s skip to the photos.

Par For The Course

Here’s the latest message from yet another “suitor.”

“Hi beautiful Goddess,Im in search of a female led relationship which the woman is the boss and likes to be in control.Im submissive for the right lady,a man belongs on his knees kissing his woman’s feet.”

I won’t post his handle because his message isn’t trying to insult me – it’s just weird  Ladies, this is what’s out there!  Guys, WTH?!

As if you couldn’t guess, this message and the one from the insecure Bozo in the previous post give you a glimpse into the psyche of men in these parts.  THAT is why I haven’t bothered to go out with or friend anyone from that website in two years or more!

(And yeah, I know you’re laughing your a**es off right now.)  You’re welcome!!!

Another Unsatisfied Customer

Oh, those men on the dating websites who must not have had a date in quite some time!  They’ve nothing better to do than write nasty messages to me because they don’t like my profile.  I’ve promised to post most, if not all, of their smarmy messages, though, so here goes another one.

This is from RicBuck53 who’s 62 & from Modesto, CA:

“Your subpar experience with men at OKC is your fault. Some reasonably intelligent and normal women have no idea which men are suitable friends. Mostly, it is a misguided pursuit of “chemistry” that leads the poor choosers astray. In other words, you invite the shi*heads into your life.”

Oh no, he didn’t stop there.  He had to send me yet ANOTHER message.

“Furthermore, if a man uploaded many pics of himself with the women he had met and partied with, it would probably be a good bet that he is an insecure jerko*f trying to show us how worldly and popular he is.. The same might be said of a woman.. And neither are likely to attract the better people

That should give you some ideas why OKC is not working well for you.

And finally, blaming others for your own failures is a losers habit.. ”

Aww, I’m so crushed that he doesn’t like my profile and doesn’t want to date me.  I mean, “Thanks, Dad” for all of the advice.  It’s really unfortunate that my posting too many photos, with other men (gasp!) bothers him.  (By the way, some of those photos were with Pacific Islander musicians that I support by attending their concerts, one was of a friend in Bali and HIS friends, and one of the photos was with one of the guys from work.)  Even my travel photos, with no one in them, bother him!  Apparently, my photos make him feel inadequate.  That would seem to be HIS problem, not mine, wouldn’t one think?  Besides, you guys have read all about those dating “adventures” from the early days of this blog.  Feel free to visit his profile and send him a conciliatory message.  Maybe he’ll send you a charming response, too!

Update:  He’s now calling himself “TheFlagIsUp” and lists himself as being 63 from Modesto, California.  Apparently, trying to be on the DL now.

Oh, My, My, Miami!

My last three birthdays have been spent out of the country.  This year I wanted to go somewhere warm with a beach, but not that far away.  Miami seemed to fit the bill, so I booked a trip using my Delta air miles.

Getting there was a bit arduous.  It involved a midnight flight out of SFO, plus a 3 1/2 (or was that 4 1/2?) layover in Minneapolis.  Even so, I arrived in Miami around 2:30 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon.  Rather than taking a taxi or booking a shuttle, I followed the advice on TripAdvisor and took the Airport Flyer Bus into South Beach.  It DID involve rolling my suitcase quite a ways, but the fare was only $2.65 one-way and the bus didn’t take long at all.  The bus dropped me at 13th and Washington, then I rolled my suitcase over to Collins Avenue, down a few blocks and began searching.  Unfortunately, the doorway to the condos that I was staying in was somewhat narrow and set back a little bit, so I rolled past it 2 or 3 times.  The code for the gate worked fine.  The code for the building also worked fine.  The code for the apartment door, however, not so much.  I ended up calling the owner who sent someone over to let me in.  There was a problem with the top lock and code, so I simply used the key for the bottom lock from that point on.

After showering up and resting briefly, I donned some shorts, a summery top and some slippers and went in search of La Sandwicherie in the 84 degree weather.  I wasn’t positive about the safety of the neighborhood, but didn’t feel threatened or uncomfortable anywhere.  Luckily, La Sandwicherie was very close to my condo.  I found a stool at the counter and ordered a chicken salad and Swiss cheese sandwich on a croissant.  My sandwich was made very quickly and was HUGE!  I only managed to finish half of that deliciousness.  They packed up my other half with some extra napkins and their famous vinaigrette.

As I walked back to my condo, a guy who worked at the hotel next door convinced me to give their bar a try for Happy Hour.  The nice bar was small, intimate and nicely decorated, which was my preference instead of those loud, flashy bars on Ocean Drive filled with frat boys and glitzy tourists.  The two gregarious bartenders, A. and J., introduced themselves to me and kept me entertained for a couple of hours.  Since I’m not a fan of regular margaritas or mojitos, A. whipped up a tasty pineapple-coconut mojito for me.  In fact, I had two!  Somewhere along the line, I also ended up doing a Sex on the Beach shot, along with two tequila shots.  By then, you can imagine that I was a little loopy.  When I informed the boys that I needed to go, due to jet lag, they made another pineapple-coconut mojito and put it in a to-go cup for me.  Now that’s service!  They made me promise to return the following evening.

My Wednesday night was nothing exciting; went to bed relatively early to be ready for the following day.

On Thursday morning I went directly to the beach, but not in my bathing suit – a sundress.  Lummus Park Beach Walk was beautiful.  I walked all the way down to South Pointe, happened upon Joe’s Stone Crab take-away/take-out (they had sock monkeys!) and also walked all the way down to the Lincoln Road Mall.  The outdoor mall is pretty big, with plenty of restaurants with outdoor seating.  I browsed, picked up some macarons from Laduree and went in search of real food.  I ended up near my condo at a place called Ferli Gelateria.  It’s gotten high marks on TripAdvisor, so figured it must be good.  The girl manning the counter was extra friendly and pleasant.  I ordered a Cubano, then some strawberry and pistachio gelato.  The Cubano was edible, but not very good at all.  The strawberry seemed to be gelato, but the pistachio seemed to be ice cream.  Anyway, I wasn’t impressed.

Later that evening, I had dinner at Taquiza, an informal little taqueria that’s kind of hidden on Collins Avenue.  I ordered a barbacoa taco for $3.50, plus a Negra Modelo.  The barbacoa was slightly fatty, but had good flavor.  Optional toppings included radishes, onions, cilantro and salsa verde.  The guys who worked there were friendly and happy.  The house music was chill, too.

I then window shopped my way down Collins Avenue and somehow ended up back at Joe’s Stone Crab.  The place was buzzing, but I found a seat at the bar.  The young bartender, B., took care of me all evening.  I had a glass of Benziger merlot, followed by a Key Lime Martini with a graham cracker crust rim.  B. told me that Joe’s Stone Crab is a seasonal restaurant that closes 5 months of the year.  They’d only reopened about 3 weeks earlier, so were going gangbusters.  When the bar died down a little bit, he offered to give me a brief tour of the restaurant.  He even introduced me to one of his bosses.  Back at the bar, we found that we both love travel and photography.  He even gave me his Instagram account information.  I confessed that I’d probably return the following evening for my birthday dinner.  His advice was to arrive relatively early to avoid a long wait, as they don’t take reservations.  He also told me that he doesn’t work on Fridays or Saturdays, but would be there on Sunday at the server bar.  He told me to feel free to stop by and say “Hello.”

I finally made it to the beach – in my bathing suit – late Friday morning.  Wouldn’t you know it?  It began to sprinkle about 40 minutes after my arrival.  I packed my things, went back to the apartment and rinsed off.  It was time to do more exploration of the neighborhood, with a trusty umbrella in hand.  Though I was thinking of trying a Cubano at Las Olas, I went to Otentic Fresh Food Restaurant instead because it was my birthday and I deserved it!  The French waiter, A., started my meal off with a complimentary tasting of chardonnay, as well as mini toasts with a wonderful olive tapenade.  I ordered the scallops special, then inquired about the 2-for-1 Mimosas.  Although they normally serve the Mimosas on the weekend for brunch, he was willing to make some for me.  Unfortunately, they were out of orange juice.  He remedied my disappointment with a glass of Prosecco and a glass of champagne!  The scallops came with both ratatouille and couscous.  The portion was a little large for me, but, taste-wise, everything was very good.

Following B.’s advice, I was at Joe’s Stone Crab around 5:30 p.m. for my birthday dinner.  From the gentleman who seated me to my waiter, Thomas, everyone was incredibly nice and welcoming.  B.’s boss recognized me from the previous night and welcomed me back.  For dinner, I went with the crab cakes, the potatoes Lyonnaise and a glass of Chablis.  The two crab cakes were big and meaty.  The potatoes Lyonnaise were ample enough to serve two.  The food is good, but the service was excellent.

Back at the apt., I freshened up a bit, then decided to go out and wander.  As I walked out the gate, A. was sitting on the wall with a girl smoking a cigarette.  He asked where I’d been the previous evening; said that both J. and he had been disappointed, as they’d been bored without me.  I informed A. that I was going to the bar straight-away.  He said that he’d be there in a few minutes.  I sat there a bit before J. showed up.  He also asked where I’d been the previous evening and DID say that they’d been waiting for me.  I apologized for disappointing them, then ordered a rum and Coke.  Soon after, A. and the girl returned to the bar and sat on either side of me.  When J. was making a drink for her, he made one for me as well.  She asked if I was traveling alone and I asked the same of her.  That’s when A. stepped in and said something to her like “We’re not going to talk about that again; I just got you to quit crying.”  I felt bad then.  When she found out that it was my birthday, she told A. in Spanish that she wanted to buy a tequila shot for me.  He told her that I don’t like tequila shots.  I opted for a kamikaze instead.  A. wasn’t familiar with how to make one, so looked it up on his phone.  He asked if I wanted Sprite in mine.  I said “Sprite?  I’ve never had a kamikaze with Sprite in it!”  There were various versions that he found on-line, but I told him that mine didn’t need the Sprite.  The girl and I were drinking them, but she thought hers was too strong.  A. poured some grenadine in hers to make her happy.

Once again, I didn’t stay out late after those drinks.  Besides, I was attempting to budget my money a LITTLE bit!

On Saturday, it sprinkled off and on, as well as a few moments of hard rain, too.  I walked over to Las Olas, saw the long line, then proceeded to go next door to Under the Mango Tree.  I ordered their basic acai bowl to go.  It was a 20 minute wait because they’re so popular.  My acai bowl had the normal bananas and strawberries on top with the granola, but had the addition of cocoa nibs and coconut shavings.  The actual acai mixture was more chocolate-y in taste than any that I’ve had before.  It was also more brown and less sweet than the ones I’ve had in Hawaii.

I went back to the apt. and waited to hear from J., my college ex-boyfriend’s ex-roommate. His wife and he returned from a cruise that morning.  After driving his wife and sister-in-law to Fort Lauderdale to do some shopping at some huge mall, he returned to Miami to have lunch with me.  J. wanted bandeja paisa and guanabana (soursop) juice.  A. had actually suggested La Ventana to me, so that’s where we went.  We both ordered empanadas and guanabana juice, then shared patacones, papas and yucca.  Not having seen each other for 30+ years, we had lots of catching up to do.

The remainder of my afternoon was spent doing more window shopping since the weather wasn’t cooperating with me as far as sunbathing.

That evening I marched directly to the bar before the guys had a chance to track me down!  A. informed me that it was his last night working there as another corporation had bought the hotel, but wasn’t keeping any of the original employees.  I was sad to hear that.  J. said that he’d be around a “bit longer.”  I assumed he meant through the end of the following week.  I didn’t want to say goodbye to either one of them, but they eased my goodbye with another pineapple-coconut mojito in a to-go cup!

For dinner, it was back to Otentic.  The same waiter, A., recognized me when I walked in and said “Welcome back!”  This time the complimentary taste was of sauvignon blanc, with the same mini toasts and olive tapenade.  I was debating between the Steak Maurice and the Filet Mignon.  A. said that they’d be happy to make the Steak Maurice for me with filet mignon rather than ribeye, for a mere $2 more.  That was perfect.  I then asked A. whether the Malbec or the Cotes du Rhone would be a better accompaniment.  He suggested Nero d’Avola, which actually wasn’t on their wine list by the glass.  He brought some for me to taste, however, just to confirm.  It worked very well with the wonderful Steak Maurice – filet mignon in a mushroom and Brie sauce served over delicious gratin Dauphinoise.  I savored every bite.

My plan was to then return to the apartment, nap until midnight, then go out for more drinks.  I passed out on the couch.  When I woke up at midnight, I had a slight headache.  Plan scrapped!

On Sunday I was up a little earlier than usual to hit up the Lincoln Road Antiques Market.  There were several really nice booths.  I, personally, was in cuff links Heaven!  I escaped after purchasing 2 pairs of cuff links (a silver pair with what appears to be an Aztec design and a more vintage pair that the seller said was “demisheen” or something akin) and a cameo.  By then, my stomach was growling.  I’d heard someone mention that a Shake Shack was in the area.  I found it, ordered a cheeseburger, fries and a soda, then waited with great anticipation.  It was good, but I slightly prefer In N Out.  I’d eat it again, though; maybe in Vegas.

Since there didn’t appear to be a single gray cloud in the sky, I FINALLY made it to the beach for a couple of hours.  The temperature was absolutely perfect with a light, cool breeze.  Laying in my bikini, catching some rays and people watching made me so, so happy.

Before dinner that evening, I stopped in for the 3rd time at a shop on Washington Avenue called Hector Riccione.  They make handmade leather boots, belts and bags in every color imaginable.  While they’re certainly not cheap, they are definitely a fair price for what they are.  I’d already been there twice to try on various boots and belts.  The belts didn’t have sizes, however, and were a little large for me, although they said that they could just make extra holes to make them tighter.  I settled on a pair of light pink knee-high boots and the saleswoman was sweet enough to offer me a 15% discount.  That was my birthday present to myself – not the best one of this year, but a very good one.

Cara Mia Trattoria over on Alton Road had rated highly on TripAdvisor, so I walked all the way over there, although there were several Italian restaurants closer to my apartment.  The place was quiet on a Sunday evening.  Most of the patrons were eating outside, but I opted for indoor seating.  With apparently only 2 staff working on the inside, it took a moment for them to seat me.  All I wanted was pasta!  When I inquired whether the waiter suggested the lasagna or carbonara or something else, he recommended the Fettuccine alla Calabro – egg pasta with shrimp, young asparagus and parsley.  I also had a glass of Sangiovese.  Because I didn’t have an appetizer, I was able to finish all of the pasta, though it was a decent-sized serving.  As a testament to how good it was, I even ate all of the asparagus, which I’ve never been a fan of!

Since B. had said that he’d be working at the server bar at Joe’s Stone Crab on Sunday, I then walked over there.  The place was a madhouse, though.  People were three deep at the main bar and I didn’t feel like dealing with it.  Beings B. and I had exchanged Instagram info, I knew that I can always contact him, anyway, and will be back in the future.

Still in the mood for a drink, I continued down (or was it up?) the street in the direction of my apartment.  Thankfully, I noticed a nice and inviting bar space inside Tiramesu restaurant.  The friendly hostess greeted me at the door, as I asked if it was ok just to have drinks at the bar, which it was.  The bartender, C., was suggesting the cocktail menu to me, although I told him that I normally drink wine or champagne.  He admitted that he’d created the ten cocktails on the menu himself and would really like for me to try one or two of them.  I acquiesced.  He started me off with the Caribbean Lust (a winner), then the Kingdom  Come (another winner), the Fighting for the Flag (yet another winner) and finally the Claudio’s Sour (not a fan).  He didn’t charge me for the Claudio’s Sour, but concocted a few more cocktails for me that weren’t even on the menu.  One had jalapeno with blood orange-infused vodka.  Another was a “dessert” cocktail with chocolate and blood orange.  In fact, between those last two cocktails, I’d intended to leave and had asked for the bill.  C., however, said that the next drink was on him because he didn’t want to miss my company.  How sweet!  We’d had an all-encompassing conversation already about Italy, how he’d ended up in Miami, his travels, his cocktails and various other things.  Another waiter, A., stopped by and had a nice chat with me as well about language, France, Italy, Morocco, etc.  In fact, he invited me for a drink when he finished work, but I didn’t take him up on that.  Yet another waiter teased me that C. was going to get me drunk, in a nice way, with all of his cocktails.  Yet C. told him that I was completely fine after 5 or 6 of them!  Finally, two women were at the bar celebrating the birthday of one, whose actual birthday was the following day.  Since mine had been on Friday and C.’s had been on Wednesday, C. gave we 3 ladies complimentary tequila shots.  I will definitely return to Tiramesu in the future and plan to have a full-on dinner there, followed by more of C.’s delicious cocktail creations.

Monday morning I took my cameras and traipsed up and down Ocean Drive and the beach taking my final photos.  I stopped in at La Sandwicherie for another chicken salad and Swiss cheese croissant sandwich, but also had a Bora Bora smoothie.  All too soon, it was time to head to the airport.

In retrospect, I had an amazing, relaxing, fun time in Miami.  I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.  The beach was beautiful, the food was good, it was safe, and more importantly, the people were incredibly nice and friendly.  I can’t wait to go back; I just hope that I’m able to locate all of my favorite bartenders again!

Adieu to You

On my last day in Siem Reap, I once again went to the Old Market to buy another pair of baggy pants. After stumbling upon The Blue Pumpkin Bakery, I picked up some macarons.  Unfortunately, they were sort of crunchy on the outside. Kaya Spa gave me a very good one hour candle massage for $25; they melt massage oil candles and then massage you with the heated oil. That was followed by a $15 facial at Angel Spa/Massage, which was great because they do extractions. MyI ate some fried rice with three chicken skewers at The Sun for a mere $5, then spent an hour asleep by the pool. Mr. Sey picked me up at 6:00 p.m. to take me to the Phare Cambodian Circus. The circus performers are all youths who come from disadvantaged families. The circus is like a mini Cambodian version of Cirque du Soleil, though they have 2 or 3 different shows, which alternate. I’d reserved a VIP seat on-line for $35. Everyone there was very nice. You walk through their gift shop first, which has many interesting products. You’re then in their café area. My ticket included a complimentary bag of popcorn, but I passed on that and simply had a soda while waiting for the show to begin. My seat was basically the absolute middle of the front row – the best seat in the house. I was certainly happy about that. All of us in the VIP seats also received complimentary bottled water, as well as an adorable elephant mobile. The performers were very animated, talented and proud to be involved with the project. After the show, which was nearly an hour and a half, guests were invited to meet the performers and take pictures with them. I passed on that because the mosquitos had chosen to devour me during the performance and I really couldn’t handle any more of being eaten alive! Once outside, Mr. Sey confessed that he’d gone to a wedding reception and had a few drinks while I was in the circus. Whatever, as long as he could get me back to my hotel safely. He then had a burning question to ask me. What was it? He wanted to know how I get my teeth so white! As I tell everyone – Crest White Strips; they really work! I paid Mr. Sey $6 and he clarified that he’d be there at 9:00 a.m. to take me to the airport. Back at the hotel, I changed, rested momentarily, then wandered back out for a few drinks on my final night in Siem Reap.  Rather than deal with Pub Street again, I found an intimate, moody little bar only a block away from Pub Street. At Miss Wong, I had an order of har gow and a couple of glasses of red wine before turning in for the evening. In a nutshell, I don’t have strong feelings about Cambodia, one way or the other. The temples were completely worth seeing and the people were friendly enough, but the food was rather bland and the heat and humidity really got to me. On the other hand, I also enjoyed my photography tour, the Khmer boxing and the Phare Cambodian Circus, as well as dressing up to be photographed as an apsara dancer. Siem Reap won’t be on the top of my list to return to, but I won’t complain if my travels take me there again.
